Tournament Results for Lake Berryessa on December 12, Capel Ramp, on the water 6:45AM

Fishing Report by Scott Povio
My fish were 1 smallie, 3 spots and 1 largemouth. I think that was a good ratio as far as what every was catching. The water was 55 degrees, pretty clear about 6 feet of visibility and I would say the lake was down about 40 feet. I know Mario, Jim and I caught most of our fish shallow.  I dont think I caught a fish more than 15 feet deep. I caught mine on a oxblood red flake robo worm with a flick shake head.  Mario caught fish on drop shot and a scrounger. All of the guys that weighed in limits were fishing in the south end of the lake and the narrows.  Guys that went up to Puta creek only caught 1 or 2. And it was a thousand times better than Anderson!!!!

Fishing Report by Jim Woolridge
Mario and I was mostly using the secret bait, that can not be mentioned. We also caught a few on drop shot. I threw a floating swim bait in the morning and well as a 5.5" Mikey. I sprained my shoulder on Tuesday morning when I fell on the frost. So that swim bait was not for me very long.  It even hurt when I set the hook on my first fish with the secret bait.

The bite was better when the wind and rains caused a ripple on the water. We fished in the narrows around Little Portugeses mainly rocky points.  We would cast to the rocks and work it slowly back toward the boat, the bite was typically very suttle.  The fish were shallow to 30 feet.  Air temperatures was reasonable at 45 degrees and the water temp was 45-47.  The showers came in cells with a little calm in between.  All in all a nice time on the water inspite of bad shoulder and a little rain.

The big fish was a nice 3.36 pound smallie by Scott. Mario had mostly spots to two pounds mixed with a couple of largies to the upper 2s.  I had a large and the four spots to 2 pounds.  70% of the catch were spots, 10% smallies and 20% largemouth as a guess.

Turkey Shoot Tournament Results for Lake Anderson on November 8, Main Ramp, on the water 8:30AM

Fishing Report by Jim Woolridge
We had a good time on Anderson but the bite was really tough. Sunny with some afternoon winds to 15 MPH. I am not sure of the exact weights but Jerry Boyd won it with 8+, I was 2nd with 7+ on the bait that shall not be mentioned and Don was 3rd with 7+, Mario was 4th 6+ and Jeff Smith was 5th with around 6.

There was a big hassle with DFG for not having the correct permits for the lake (New Melones vs Anderson). During the fishing they boarded all the boats, made a license & safety check then had us show them our fish. Later it was announced that if we removed and weighed-in any fish that Darwin would receive three fines. So we all did a weigh-in on the water, recorded the totals with our partners and then released the fish before coming into the launch area. Afterwards they also checked each livewell in the parking lot to insure no one had any fish.

Almost everyone then headed to Red Robin for the trophy and results. It was nice to see Darwin made it out of handcuffs (just kiddin) in time for the official result announcement.

Seriously though, we need to be diligent in having the correct paper work if we change a tournament location. Obviously it is better not to change if at all possible. Also the TD and president should both have copies of our updated permits and rules in their boats at all times during club sanctioned events. Jim

Tournament Results for Clear Lake on October 10, Redbud Ramp, on the water 6:30AM

Fishing Report by Joe Nicolai

Jerry Boyd was my partner and we drove up to Clear Lake by 2:00. We got on the water and checked a few spots. Weather was great, low wind and sunny. Nice day, found some fish on our third spot, figured we would start there in the mourning. Got off the water, got a call from Jim W. Dinner at the local diner, so me and Jerry went and had supper. Next mourning cool but low wind, nice day. Blast off went great thanks to Ray C. Me and Jerry got two fish on our first spot and struggled on the rest. The Lake is down, and fishing the shade put you at times in 1 foot of water. But the fish were shallow. Jerry had 3, and I had 2. Not our best but we had great weather and a good time. Everyone had a good time and the weight- in went well. It was good to see Jim w. in the boat again.

Tournament Results for the Night Tournament on Clear Lake September 19, Limit Out Tackle Ramp, on the water Saturday 6:00PM

Fishing Report by Don Welch
All,

The Clearlake tourney was a good night of fishing. Ron Hunneywell and Mike Bacon got 5 fish for 20# for 1st place. I believe that they were dropshotting and cranking for their fish. Congratulations guys!!! I believe that this is Mike Bacons first win so he gets his GBM plaque if a team tourney counts?? Adam Hawley and I got 16.22# (plus one dead fish penalty) for 2nd. We caught most of our keepers on crank baits and Adam was dropshoting,  I also caught one on the 3:16 swimbait. Chuck and Underdog came in 3rd with 16.1#? for 3rd. Most teams caught lots of  fish all in the 2.5# to 3# range and were culling early.

BTW: Glen and Rick from San Jose State and GBM WON the Western Regional FLW College Championship!!!! They led from day one. I spoke with them each night and they wanted  to really thank GBM for our support and input.

San Jose State University wins National Guard FLW College Fishing Western Regional on Cal Delta
California duo led wire-to-wire en route to capturing $50,000 first-place prize, automatic berth in 2010 College Fishing National Championship

21.Sep.2009

STOCKTON, Calif. – The San Jose State University team of Glen Wyatt of Vallejo, Calif., and Eric Andersen of San Jose, Calif., led wire-to-wire and won the National Guard FLW College Fishing Western Division Regional event on the California Delta Monday with six bass weighing 11 pounds, 9 ounces for a three-day total of 17 bass weighing 37-10. For their efforts, the team won a Ranger 177TR with a 90-horsepower Evinrude or Yamaha outboard wrapped in school colors and $25,000 for the school they represent.

“This really makes you feel great,” said Andersen, who recently graduated with a business marketing degree. “We prefished and it paid off, and we got the late bite and it was dramatic every day. If feels great to just be here right now.”

“This is the greatest feeling in the world right now,” said Wyatt, who is a kinesiology major. “I'm on top of the world right now.”

Wyatt said the team relied on finesse worms fished slowly throughout the tournament for their daily catches. While other teams tried power fishing or topwater techniques, the San Jose State team stuck with the slow but sure method — and it paid off to the tune of $50,000.

“We figured everybody else would be throwing big stuff,” Wyatt said. “It's fall time and everybody's trying to beef up, so we downsized. It was too hot. They didn't want the big stuff. They wanted the small stuff.

“We went out and practiced every day and just listened to the fish,” Wyatt added. “They'll tell you what they want.”

“This guy is the fish whisperer, man,” Andersen said. “He tells me what the fish are talking about. I just do what he says.”

The San Jose State team said they are looking forward to the National Guard FLW College Fishing National Championship in Knoxville, Tenn., April 10-12, 2010.

“I'm looking forward to fishing with the top in the nation and getting out to Tennessee,” Andersen said.

“The best is in the west,” Wyatt added. “Let's get that straight.”

San Jose State nets FLW College Fishing Western Regional title
Team Wyatt-Andersen complete Delta sweep, net $50,000 in scholarships and prizes in victory
By David A. Brown -  21.Sep.2009

http://www.collegefishing.com/tournament.cfm?tid=6181&t=news&atype=6

STOCKTON, Calif. – Talk about sandbagging. San Jose State's Eric Andersen executed a highlight-reel “gotcha” at weigh-in en route to sealing the wire-to-wire victory along with partner Glen Wyatt in the National Guard FLW College Fishing Western Regional Championship on the California Delta.

Here's the scene: Sacramento State's Christopher Wong and Alec Brassington, who trailed the lead by about a pound going into day three, sat in the hot seat with a leading weight of 34-7. Wyatt had dropped three keepers into the tank and Andersen followed with a pair of his own. A few moments of dramatic commentary ensued, but just before San Jose State's weight was officially locked in, Andersen indicated that he had a surprise.

A 5-pound surprise with a mossy-green back and a big mouth.

With that fish, San Jose State surged ahead to seal the deal with a day-three catch of 11 pounds, 9 ounces and a tournament total of 37-10. Topping the field by a 3-pound, 3-ounce margin, Andersen of San Jose, Calif., and Wyatt of Vallejo, Calif., completed their three-day ride atop the standings. For their efforts, they earned $25,000 for their university and a 177TR Ranger boat wrapped in their school colors and powered by an Evinrude or Yamaha outboard engine.

Asked if the pressure of leading the event since day one affected his team's performance, Wyatt said: “No pressure – you just relax and go fishing. It's just another day on the job.”

Here's how they got the job done. On day one, the anglers fished in partly cloudy conditions, caught plenty of fish and grabbed their early lead with a six-fish limit weighing 14 pounds, 13 ounces. The next day, clear skies and hotter conditions made for a tough bite, and they bagged five bass for 11-4. A mix of topwater plugs, finesse worms and ChatterbBait-type lures delivered on the first two days.

Wyatt described day three as “a carbon copy of day two, but a little more dramatic, I might say.” After Zara Spooks and ChatterBaits failed to produce, both anglers fished wacky-rigged finesse worms under bridges and in other shady areas all day.

“When the big-fish patterns weren't working out, we just went back to the basics,” Wyatt said. “We have a saying: ‘You dance with the girl that brought you to the dance.'”

Andersen noted: “The key was fishing it really slow. I wasn't even moving the worm (when the big fish bit). I cast out, actually set my rod down for a second, pick it back up and shake it and boom – fish on.”

Andersen's show-stopper came around 1:30 on the last spot they fished. “We decided that we were going to live or die there. We had a small limit; actually I had two that just made the (12-inch minimum). Glen had one nice fish, and I had one decent one, but looking back, we wouldn't have won without that fish.

“I had a feeling we were in a good spot (with that fish), but I didn't know for sure. I know the other guys fish well, and I figured everyone else would have a limit. It would just come down to who got that kicker.”

Results for the Club Tournament of Champions is on September 12 & 13th at the Delta, Holland Ramp

The format is a 2 day, Saturday 12:00 PM to 6:30 PM, Sunday 6:30 AM to 1:00 PM, and awards at 2:30 PM.

Awards and lunch at the Brentwood Cafe at about 2:30 PM. We have a small room reserved. From Holland marina, take Delta Road,
left on Sellers Ave., then right on Balfour Rd., then right on Brentwood Blvd. .3 miles. 8500 Brentwood Blvd, Brentwood, CA .
It's a "redneck" place with good food and plenty of parking. We had a Top 6 there last year.

Club rule 22:
22. Top 6 team Every year, if enough funds are available, a Tournament of Champions will be held. The participants will be selected from the top twelve (12) anglers based on the anglers total pounds. The Angler of the Year will organize and plan the tournament. The total expense to the club will be $720. This will be paid out as Big Fish $100 with Trophy, $300 for first place, $180 for second place, and $120 for third place. The additional approximate $20 will pay for the plates and trophy. To fish the TOC you must be a member in the year that it is held.

Club rule 35:
Once we are on the water, the Tournament Director is in charge. Whenever there is a tournament situation that occurs after the draw that is not covered by club rules or that is a judgement call, then the Tournament Director makes the decision. A vote is not necessary. The Tournament Director may consult with other officers but this is not a requirement. The idea is that we need an immediate decision, not an argument.

Club rules apply.

Thanks
  Chuck

Tournament Results for the Two Day at Clear Lake on July 18 & 19, Lakeport Ramp, on the water Saturday 1:00PM-7:30PM, Sunday 5:30AM-12:00PM

Fishing Report by Walter Baker
Mario and I launched from Konocti Vista Casino ramp about 8am on Friday to do some pre-fishing. After about six hours of fishing, we had located some promising spots for the tournament, catching fish on a variety of baits: 'the bait that shall not be named', my variation of that rig, lipless cranks, jerkbaits, etc. The water temperature was warm, varying from 83-91 degrees.

Saturday started well at our prime stop with Mario putting a limit in the livewell within a couple of hours and me with four fish in the boat at that point. After a couple of break-offs at the next spot, we returned to our prime spot for what we hoped was another "milk run". But at that point, the heat had me wondering if I would be able to continue fishing or have to curl up in a fetal position and pour water over myself.

Mario got bit and it was clearly a seriously good fish. We danced around with the fish for what seems like forever, Mario with the fish and me with the net. Finally Mario got the fish to the boat and we saw the whiskers--a 8 pound catfish!!!

Somehow I got a "half wind" (not enough to call it a 'second wind') and boated my fifth fish. We got a few more bites, but by then we were both starting to fade from the heat and got ready to run back north for the weigh-in.

Sunday morning we went back to our prime spot for another "milk run" and I had a limit in the livewell in just over an hour and Mario had four in the boat. After catching my sixth fish and culling one of the earlier fish, we moved on. The algae bloom was so bad in all of those next spots, we were cleaning lures, reels, and line as much as fishing.

We then headed back for a last pass where we started in the morning. By then that spot was in full algae bloom, but we decided to give it a shot anyway. First cast and I was bit as soon as my lure hit the water. Definitely a good fish and it took a few minutes to get this one to the boat. Just as I got it out of the muck and ready to be netted, we saw a set of whiskers again--a 6 pound catfish!!! Guess I am now a member of that club :-) Even with the algae bloom, we both pick up a couple fish at the spot besides the catfish. We end the day at Henderson Point and Mario boats a fish to cull with.

A plug for my TackleTour http://www.tackletour.net/TTForums/ blog on TackleTog http://tackletog.com/clubbing/. Hopefully, in the next few weeks, my entries will 'catch up' to the current tournaments. I also will be doing one or more articles on the "Izz rig", featuring the originator, Izz Byrd.

June 14, 15 & 16, 2009 - FLW Stren Series, Lake Oroville

Determined to reach the Peak

Charles Peak knows how to win as co-angler: determination

By Vince Meyer -  16.May.2009

OROVILLE, Calif. – If it wasn't for the fact that he's 66 years old, Charles Peak of San Jose, Calif., says he might consider turning pro. In his second season as a co-angler in the Stren Series, Peak picked up the second win of his young career Saturday on Lake Oroville.

The tournament didn't start as very promising for Peak, as he found himself in a four-way tie for 29th place after day one. But the 7-pound, 11-ounce weight he pulled that day was his smallest of the tournament. On day two he brought 10 pounds, 8 ounces to the scales and moved into second place, then iced the deal with an even 9 pounds Saturday, which was the heaviest weight caught by any co-angler that day.

Peak won $2,905 plus a Ranger boat and trailer. He already was calculating how to spend the money in the minutes after the weigh-in. Or, more accurately, his wife was.

“At first I thought this would go for a leather sofa,” Peak said. “But that's coming out of our tax refund. My wife is working on this one now. But I think I can keep the boat.”

Peak has a simple tournament philosophy: Young guys have stamina, old guys have determination.

“You can't give up,” Peak said of his on-the-water demeanor. “A lot of people start to fade about noon. But you got to hang in there to the last second. Your last cast and first cast have to be the same.”

No doubt Peak will be determined to win again when the series moves on to the California Delta on May 28.

Day 1 - 5 bass for 7-11
Day 2 - 5 bass for 10-08
Day 3 - 5 bass for 9-00
Three Day Total of 15 bass for 27-03

Tournament is a Two Day event at Lake Sonoma on May 2 & 3rd, Main Ramp, on the water 6:00AM

Fishing Report by Mike Johnson
Lake Sonoma was on fire for the tournament weekend. The rain came Friday and didn't let up until the weigh in on Sunday. Water temps where right at sixty degrees and fish were up shallow. The key was finding the grass. I ran to the back of Cherry Creek and found shallow grass flats. Found that the fish had moved out off the bank into six to eight feet of water. I threw reation in the morning for a limit with cranks and swimbaits. Mid morning I moved towards the shore and saw the outlines of beds in the weeds. The wind was blowing and the rain was coming down hard, so I couldn't see the fish. I started fishing extra slow blind casting to where I thought the beds were. Picked up fish after fish culling out my small limit of reation fish. At about 10:30 I was done. I had over 17 pounds in the livewell and did'nt want to beat up the water anymore. I gave Walter the front deck and went to the back of the boat and took a nap! Woke up about 1 o'clock picked up a rod and started catching them again.

Day two had thirty boats in another tourney and over ten of them are in my water. Again went to work blind casting to beds. Some fish were locked on beds, and others were spawning in the reeds like carp. With the wind and rain blowing,  the fish were hard to see. Pretty soon the other boats saw me pulling them in off the shallow weed flats. Everybody hit the bank and fish were being caught all over the creek. I had my limit real early but culled up slowly through the day. No holding back on day two. I probably caught twenty fish, and Walter started calling my Hoover. Most of my fish came off my hand-poured senkos but I caught them on everything I threw.

Tournament Results for the Two Day event at Clear Lake on April 18 & 19th, Redbud Ramp, on the water 6:00AM

Fishing Report by Mike Johnson
Clearlake is warming up. We had air temps in the high 80's and water temps up to 62 degrees. The wind blew hard in the days before the tournament keeping the water temp closer to 57 degrees. I got there Friday just as the warm up started. Ran all over the lake trying to figure out a pattern, with little success. But I did see some fish cruising the shallows and a couple locked on beds. So Saturday starts with me at full throttle trying to beat Chuck to a community hole near Redbud. I got there first, and Joe gets one on a dropshot. No fish for me so off to check the flat where we saw the fish before.  I got there and found the males had moved up. There were fish everywhere. The fish and beds were so hard to see because of the algee floating in the water. This was good because people moved onto my spot all day long. They would make a few casts and leave. They couldn't even see the fish! You had to get on top of the fish to see them, then move out and make casts to the nest. I caught fish after fish culling up with these bucks. I used a one-two combo to get the stubborn fish to bite. If they swam away, I'd throw a Huddlebug on the nest and leave until they come back. Shake it, & piss them off. Then throw a senko on it or a beaver or one of the ten other rods on my deck. They would jump all over the second lure most of the time. I finished the day with good sized bucks but no kicker.

Water temp had risen up to 62 degrees so I was excited for day two. I ran back to the same area and found that now it wasn't a singles party anymore. The big females had moved in crusing the shallows. I sat on my big fish for probably 30 minutes to get her to bite. I caught alot of fish and saw fish so big that my glasses would fogg up. I was sweating everytime a saw the sea-monster. But they were looking for a date, not a meal. Still had people moving into my water all day. They would see me buried in the tulies look and fish right on by. Never caught the C.L. monsters I saw but managed to get the right bites.

Tournament Results for the Delta on March 21st, Holland Ramp, on the water 6:00AM

It started out as a perfect spring day. Clear skies with mild temperatures. The water temp was 60 degrees with visibility from 2 to 3 feet. By 10am the clouds came in with a light breeze. We finished the tournament at the perfect time, when we were driving off, the rain came down in buckets. We weighed in some beautiful prespawn bass.

Congratulations to Chuck Peak for starting his season with a Grand Slam!!! His big fish was .08 ounces short of ten pounds. And yes, his limit was caught on the super super secret bait near tule islands. I think our whole club is using this super secret bait. Darwin Ellison brought in a nice bag of shallow running crankbait bass. Darwin was fishing over weedlines. Mike johnson limit was caught with everything in his boat... junk fishing... crankbait, swimbait, jig, spinnerbait and plastic.

Tournament Results for Lake Berryessa on February 7th, Capell Ramp, on the water 6:30AM

Fishing Report by Mario Jorge
On Saturday I hit a wave that just about flooded my boat. It was once of the hardest hits I have been in.

I fished on Friday, on the water 7:15 am, lite rain. Found 2 spots in the main lake holding large mouth. It had rained all day and about Noon it decided to really rain HARD. I was going to go to Putah, but deciced to go into the narrows. Caught several Spots 1 to 1/4 lb. No wind, but about 2:30p.m. I had had enough of the hard rain and pulled out.

Saturday, got to the launch at 4:30 a.m. and Ray Covert soon arrived. There was 2 to 3 other tourneys going out that day including 35 float tubers.

No wind but fog. I guess there was a misunderstanding with my non-boater and he did not show. While lauching my boat, I tripped over my trailer and landed hard in the ramp. Bruised my palm and rist, shoulder is a little soar also, but the show must go on.

Drove in heavy fog to first spot, and had about 7+lb limit before 9am. About Noon wind picked up and White caps in about 5 mins.. Hide in Berryessa Marina to see if wind would die out, but no luck. Left to go to narrows about 1pm.

Tucked in behind the big island and it was rough, but not to bad. Decided to try and get into the narrows, but speared the "BIG" set half way there. 4 inches water at my feet and back deck flooded, knocked all but 2" of the water out of the live wells. Went into Spanish flat area out of weather for the rest of the day.

Weigh in was scheduled at 4, but I pulled out at 3:30 since I was by myself, good thing, float tubers block one side of the launch and it took over an hour to get all our boat out of the water.

I came in first with 9.98 lbs., Mark Pineda was second with 7 and change, Joe came in third, Jerry was 4th. Joe won big fish with 2.46 lbs. Spotted bass .

All-in-all a good day.

Meeting at 6:00AM at Denny's Resturant, 875 Cochrane Rd., Morgan Hill to wipe down boats for inspection.

Congratulations to Walter Baker for his first tournament "Grand Slam"!!! He won first place, the big fish award, and options. Not only did Walter have a grand slam breakfast at Denny's, he caught his personal best, a 7.98 pound largemouth bass. The super secret bait is no longer a secret.
