Report by Mike Johnson
Got up to C.L. and on the water Thursday morning at six o'clock. Fished all day and all night to find a tough bite. Few nice fish but not the right ones. Friday turned ugly quick once we got on the water clouds and wind rolled in and brought rain. Got off the water and back on that night once the storm passed. Caught a 10 pound catfish by the tail. It wanted to pull me in the water, he made for some nice fillets. Tournament day comes and it is windy with a tough morning bite to boot. After blasting off and getting airborne I got to my first spot to find I've been beat getting there. No problem lets surf to the next spot. The wind was blowing and crashing wave over wave over the front of my boat. Bilge is on, feet and shoes are soaked but not giving up. I had to fish with the wind, 84 lbs thrust trolling motor in full backwards riding the troughs of the waves. Otherwise every other wave would come over the front. Decided to find some areas out of the wind. Got to the next spot and the fish started biting. I had one pole rigged with a black and blue jig and thats all I threw. I had two protected spots that were 200 yards apart and fished them till I got a limit at about ten o'clock. Once the wind died I went on my milk run stopping and catching. Ended up on a small section between two docks where we replaced every fish in the live-well. Pretty soon we saw someone else near our water and we can here them catching them too. Damn. Turns out it was Adam and Thomas, and they found our bank also to be holding good fish. We were all fishing jigs. My thumbs got tore up from all the fish I caught. Also learned Its a bad idea to swing fish on tournament day. Swung a five onto, and off the boat. That hurt cost me the win. I will call for the net from now on. Here are a couple of pics check em out.
Report by Jim Woolridge
This report is purposely vague because of the WON Tri-State tournament coming up on Wednesday - Saturday for Mario and I, Javier and Mark. We will share some details on Wednesday.
Anyway I will let Mike J provide the weights for the night tournament. We got there around 2:00 PM on Saturday and began our three hour prefish. I had a few places and baits I wanted to try out but right away in prefish it got tough for us. So Ray and I had to change our plans. Rather than fish for a 35# bag we decided to go for the 25# bag instead. At blast off it was windy, real windy but we were excited and lucky boat #7. Don calls us out and we take off in the wake of Mike and Tony and the other five boats. I veer to the right to go around them and catch some chop and waves, but we continue with the boat airborne at times. The swells were not big but the trough was long between each wave, longer than 21' 2" of Z Boat. On our forth airborne landing we came down a little weird and my foot was not on the plate. We land hard and I crack 7 or 8 vertebrae - I'm thinking, Oh no! Clark Foster and the Delta came to mind, man did it hurt. When we got to the first spot I crawled to the front of the boat moaning and groaning for Advil or Aleve. Like Mike who shows up a minute later I am fight the wind. They go to the left and we head the other way. We fished hard for 45 minutes and only had one bite. Mike, there were no fish on that spot for us, next time you can have it, unless it is spring.
We head to spot #2 and began catching a few small 2 pound fish. Ray sticks a 2.5 on a Senko and I start to catch a few on my favorite little bait. I broke off a real good fish, did not see it but felt great. It was not a catfish or carp. We had about 12 pounds at that point. When the wind died down we start the running and gunning to other spots. We ran to a few spots and there is already someone on our spots - go figure. Made the milk run also and catch a few here and there.
I ate one of the burritos Ray made and it was tasty - but a few minutes later I feel like I am having a coronary attack. My chest is completely locked up and I'm gasping for air. Ray say " are you alright?" Noooo!!!! I might be having a heart attack . He says " did you eat anything?" and I say just the burrito - what was in it? " Just beans, cheese, eggs, peppers, onions and tuna". I say TUNA?, In a burrito? I am allergic to tuna!!! I thought you used chicken? "Yeah, but I ran out of chicken and substituted the tuna, I'm sorry I did not know".
Well I survived enough to write this long email. It took about 30 minutes but the pain went away and back to normal breathing, so back to fishing. We go to an small island next to a big island and catch a nice 4.75 largemouth, but only one. We head to Konocti Resort and someone on the docks says "hey Jim is that you"? I said yes who is it? " Robert and Rob" . What are you doing here? " I broke my motor, it won"t run" . After some thinking and planning to come back and pick them up in the morning we decide it made more sense to take Robert back to Redbud to get his truck now. That way they can fish on the trolling motor and pull out around 7:00.
Small delay but we go back to our new favorite spot around 11:30 and began to get a couple more to 4.0 pounds. We now have around 16 pounds and I decide to take more Aleve for the back and eat something else to dissipate the tuna. I had already taken six pills so not sleeping wasn't an option. I was asleep in a few minutes and snoring up a storm.
Later that morning on one of my favorite early morning spots we proceeded to load the boat with 4-5 pounders. Ray caught a 5.84 pounder and I catch a 4.81 and a 4.74. I had a seven pounder come unbuttoned at 6:15AM. So if I had of caught it we would have won it for sure If, If. Incredible the amount of bait fish in the water, the entire lake was just loaded with them - they were absolutely thick. The girls should be real fat by next spring.
I will see some of you Wednesday and the others on Thursday October 2nd at the next club meeting. By the way we came in 2nd place with 23.70, Adam and Thomas had 23.87, Mike and Tony had 21.40 with Mike's big fish a nice 8.09 pounder. Adam also had a nice 7.74. Congrats guys. ohhhh those two fish that came off. Oh well that is fishing.
Tight lines and safe travels, Jim

Top-6 teams and alternates. Please let Chuck Peak know, if you have any problems with this plan. The Date is September 6 and 7, 2008. The location is the Delta, Holland Tract. The format is a 2 day, Saturday 12:00 PM to 6:30 PM, Sunday 6:30 AM to 1:30 PM. Awards and lunch at a Brentwood Restaurant at 3:00 PM. Fishing has been very good in the Delta and this looks to be a great tournament.
They caught most of their fish in Taylor slew on plastics ( Swamp Crawler wacky with nail, weightless Senko, 7X Kut Tail with nail weight ). Both days, they started in Franks Tract for the first couple of hours catching nothing. Then off to Taylor to actually catch fish. The fish were only on banks with wind rippling the water ( left side ). Day 1 big fish came on the way back from Taylor at the entrance to Franks on a rock wall. Only 1 fish in 2 days caught on tules or weeds, all of the rest on rocky banks.
Report by Mike Ponce
Ray and I decided to burn some gas. We ran south, 1st stop just south of Holland, nothing. Then to Widows Island 1st fish on a crank then Ray caught one on a Senko. Decided to ran all the way south to Del's, worked the area for a couple hour, SLOW! Missed a frog fish then about 3 pm Ray started whacking them on the swamp clawer. The last 3 hours we work a shady bank with weeds to fill out our limit culling fish. After Chuck and Javier weighed in 20+ I told Ray we had to fish for 2nd. Sunday we started in Franks Tract. I caught 3 crank fish early and Ray sticks a nice 5.98 in less then 1 foot of water on his Senko. We have our limit by 8am, cull a few fish. Ray brakes off a 5 and I miss another frog fish and the bite shuts DOWN. We camped out at Holland with Tony and Mike J. Eat good and drank good, Good times!!
Report by Eric Daniel
The report from the third place team. Darwin and I started out very slow. I forgot what area we fished on Saturday, but either way it was tough. Start off with Darwin catching a short fish, at least we found a bite this was about 2 hours into it. Finally he catches a keeper. Still a slow bite, so we head out to another area. I start pitching to the tulles and I catch a short one. A few pitches later and I get one. The Darwin gets one. Okay we got a pattern. No other bites for awhile. We move again and have less than an hour left. Darwin says the this bank produces. I end up pitching the senko and catch three fish , it completed the limit and culled the small 13 incher we had. Day two we head to Franks looking for the flip bite. Start off slow, Darwin misses a few and I miss one and have one break me off back deep in the tulles . I finally catch a 3lbr and then a 5 1/2lbr. The bite was a little slow, but I mange to get us 4 from the tulles . We try another area in Franks and Darwin gets us the limit. I miss another good fish late in the day on the senko it took it off the top and dug me into the tulles and worked itself off the hook. We end up with 13+ lbs for the day and that was after our 3 dead fish penalty. End up with 21 and some change for the 3rd place. Barley getting by Jim and Mario. It was a great time, Darwin put us in the right places to catch them.

Report by Chuck Peak
Wind was a major factor for everyone. I decided to stay in Franks tract and tough out the wind by fishing the
protected sides of islands, looking for deeper water 4+ at the edge of the tules.
My best luck was on one island with a shelf on the protected side. The real edge of the island is about
50' from the tules. I fished off the bank, away from the tules by about 5-15 feet. I also caught fish
in Taylor on rock walls but they were smaller fish. Just about everything came on Swamp Crawlers, watermelon/red.

Report by Jim Woolridge
The days were very hot from Wednesday to Friday at around 106 degrees. It gradually cooled down to a reasonable 98 by Sunday. Water temps for me was 79.8 to 83.5. It was a little smoky on Friday but cleared up some by Sunday. There were weeds everywhere and the water was crystal clear because of the weeds filtering the water.
Early Friday morning Ray Covert and I caravaned up there with Bill where we met up with Bob Greneveld in Fremont. We met Mario, Jeff Post and Tim in Napa at the Chevron station and headed to the lake. Since Bob rode up to keep Bill company he also pre-fished with him for companionship and safety.
Ray and I pre-fished mostly north since we launched at Skylark and it was a long run south (gas). Fished long Tule points and caught some nice fish. Mario was there as well. Him and I had caught some nice fish there in the WON Team event three weeks earlier. Mario caught a 6+ and and 8.5 on Friday. Mario, Ray and I went to TNT on the water for a lunch. Then back to fishing a few more hours before calling it a day. Since some of us were staying at Skylark and Mallard House that evening a group of us (Darwin, Ray, Bob G, Joe, Robert and I) went to dinner at Rene's in Lakeport.
On Saturday morning Ray and I prefished a few of my spots in the rattlesnake arm and down south with mixed results. We caught fish but all in the 1.5 - 2.5 pound class.
On Saturday afternoon I decided to stay in the northern end fishing the docks, walls around Lakeport and the southwest corner. There were a lot of weeds there but there were also better fish. Right away Bob sticks a 2.0 pounder on a senko in the weed edge. I was throwing a frog and did not get anything. We fished the wooded walls and boat docks and I stick a 2.75, 3.25 and 3.0 back to back to back. We went into the slough at the southwest corner and I stick a 3.5, all came on 301 5" senko wacky rigged. We ran to Long Tule point where we see Don and Tim and I stick a 3.25 and have a limit. We then ran to Pepperwood at the rock pile where I catch some smaller fish but Bob now has 3 fish. We finish up at another rock pile in Rattlesnake and we weigh in at 8:30 both with limits. Tim is in the lead with 18+ pounds, (with day 1 big fish of 5.9), I have 16.24 for second and Chuck is 3rd with 15.97.
On Sunday Bob and I start in the same spot around the marina and wooded walls since I figure they should replenish over night. I was right, on my second cast I stick a 2.75, few minutes later I stick a 2.5 then a few minutes after that I get the 6.30 pounder (it turned out to be big fish on day 2.) I get one more fish a 2.25. I put Bob up front since I figure I can get another fish in 5.5 hours. He gets two fish and then it goes slow, we leave for Pepperwood pile again - This time there was nothing there. We then run to Kona Tayee and we both catch a few fish to 2.0 pounds, I am now culling.
Bob say "I think I will use the bait that Bill especially made for me", it was a special rigged swamp crawler on 6 pound test. "The least I can do is say I used it". All of a sudden I hear Bob say "oh my God, this a good fish". He is fighting a great fish for a few seconds and it take a leap - it looks to be a giant. He is fighting it 20 yards behind the boat near the docks so I tell him "don't horse it I will back the boat towards it". In a split second it makes another leap and it's a 12 pounder at least, our jaws drop. All of a sudden she makes a run forward and Bob sprints up to the front deck and in a second or two she is 30 yards in front of the boat and into deep water and come unbuttoned. Bob and I are both stunned, he just can't believe it. He says "I am going to cry". I say "Oh no you don't, not on my boat, lets just catch another one". But I knew he was stunned, heck I could not stop thinking of it either.
We go to weigh in and I had 16.56 for a total of 32.80. Ron Hunnewell had a 21 pound bag on Sunday and took first place. I am not sure of the weights but he was first, I was second but got the check since he was not a member yet. I had some fun with him and encouraged him to join, he did get the options though, good job Ron. I believe Tim was 3rd, Bob Nathan was 4th.
Everyone stopped at Big Ds on the way home for lunch, we were met there by Fred Burns, and our friend Kevin Massies and his son Kevin. Kevin owns the Ford Lincoln-Mercury dealership in Napa. I think we all had a great time and wonderful weekend.
Sorry for the length, Jim

I won it with 31.54#s, was leading after day one with 16.98#s. Mario finished 2nd with 31+#s. Joe Arias finished 3rd. with 30+#s and was second on day one with 16.54#s.
Joe Arias had big fish on day 1 and Mario Jorge had big fish on day 2.
The weather was nice and mostly sunny, especially in the pm. It was a little windy at times to 20 mph but mostly around 10-15mph. Water temps were 56.7 in the am and 62.1 by 3:30 on Saturday. I believe everyone caught fish and had a great time . The BBQ was great!!!! lots of people, wonderful participation and plenty of food and drinks. We even had 14 balloons and a chocolate birthday cake for Jeremy Gustin, thanks to his grandparents and dad-Mike. Jeremy also caught a couple of real nice fish including his personal best around 4 pounds. Also nice to see the support of parents, friends and spouses.
New members Robert and Walter stuck a few nice fish as well. Robert had one fish on Saturday with one bite. But it was a nice one. If you have to catch one make it a big one. Walter had such a good time that him and Mike Ponce stayed and extra day until Monday.
Chuck Peak lost his big motor when he spun a prop and at the same time lost his trolling motor with 100 yards of fishing line caught in it. Nice to see everyone come to his rescue. Thanks Bill-Ray, Don-MikeB, Me-Joe.
We also made our usual stop at BIG D's in Napa for the traditional cheesburger and shakes on the way home. Nice to see you Fred Burns, thanks for showing up to support the club. I will let Mike J fill in the other details.

Fishing Report by Mike Johnson
The big fish haven't moved up yet at the creek. Water temps were 59 to 60 degrees, clear skies and STRONG winds all day. I faced it head on and caught fish on three out of my five first casts. Found fish on a rocky bank with K.V.D's sexy shad cranks. Then found fish buried in the tules around wood and protected pockets. Got those flipping and pitching worms and beavers. Also managed to put one in the boat on a basstrix. Darwin and Jeff got their fish up the creek on speedtraps, off of tule points. Mike Gustin and Mike Barnett caught their limit on swamp crawlers on tules and Mike Ponce caught the big fish of the day 7.37 lbs. pitching his jig to isolated tules.

Fishing Report by Eric Daniel
McClure had a good bite but not the right size. I was able to find my non-boater Mike Gustin and I some fish, we caught them all day long but only managed 7 keepers between us, and that was better than most boats. Jerry Boyd caught the only limit and Mike Gustin had 4 fish, they took 1st and second. Joe Arias had the big fish it was almost a 5 lb spot. I caught my fish on the shakey head with reaction innovations worm and Mike Gustin used a swamp crawler. I think everyone caught fish but finding the 15 inchers was the tough task. I actually pre-fished Friday from 1-4 and caught three keepers and went to that spot in the morning and we caught all 7 keepers in that area, but it took awhile.

TopCongratulations to Chuck Peak for his 1st place finish and Mike Barnett for the 2nd place finish. Mike and Chuck were using the swamp crawler north of Franks Track. It sounded like they had a good day. They started their first limit with smallmouth bass, then culled them out for largemouth. This was Jeff Post's second tournament with the club and his 1st time in the money. Congratulations guys!!!.

Fishing Report by Jim Woolridge
The Berryessa tournament was fun but the bite was tough and there were a handfull of limits. The temperatures was 29 degrees at blast off and that first run was breathe taking to say the least. The sky was blue bird and a front had just gone through. Water temperatures was 48 degrees at blast off and 52 by afternoon.
Everyone was there that was suppose to be there, there were 12 boats and 24 anglers. In fact we had Fred Burns join us at the weigh-in, "nice seeing you Fred" Several of the guys pre-fished for the tournament but the bite seemed to change on them over night. Darwin won it with 8.47 pounds, big fish was less than 2.25 pounds. I came in second with 7.84 with a 1.80 big fish and Mark Pineda was third with 7.70. Mike can provide you all the dirty details.
My son James came in 11th place with 6.39 pounds. We were both excited to have the time on the water together and look forward to it every year.
