It was another tough fishing day. We had a few blanks. The water was dropping and it was after a storm.
From what I heard most of the bass were caught deep and near the southern end of the lake on plastics.

Some people had a hard time waking up, but the fish didn’t mind. A lot of small fish were caught. Not bad after a cold front. It was a cold clear Saturday.
Vince Borrego was a late entry, but he took 1st place. He even put his non-boater on fish. Vince was drop shoting rocky points in 30 to 60 feet of water. Ray Covert caught his 2nd place limit carolina rigging in 25 feet of water near the Putah Creek bridge. Justin Baldasano drop shotted near Pope Creek for his 3rd place and big bass award.

First of all… CONGRATULATIONS!!! We Took 2nd Place. To put it mildly we kicked some BASS!!! Although we missed 1st place by only 2 pounds, our winning weight was 70.37 lbs for 30 bass. Chuck Peak took Biggest Fish Honors with a 7.99 lbs. largemouth, Adam McAndrews took 2nd Biggest Fish with a 5.74 pounder, and the Bob Greneveld & Adam McAndrew boat took Biggest Bag with a 16.99 pound limit. Chuck Peak & Jim Woolridge took 2nd Biggest Bag with a 15.93 lbs. Our 12 fishermen took home $1,200 in winnings. Not bad at all.
I want to thank Bob Greneveld for attending the 1st NCCC meeting, I wasn’t able to attend. And I want to thank Zak Elrite for attending the 2nd NCCC meeting and organizing the guys on the Thursday before the event.
The following was written by Jim Woolridge. Thanks Jim for sending me this email.
The Club Top event at Russo's was excellent, it started at 4:30 in the morning, everything was quick and organized, the inspection, launch and recovery. There was a release boats, camera boat, swift weigh in with aerated holding tanks and great MC by Cooch. I heard there was really good food consisting of BBQ tri-tip, baked beans, salad and fixings. Unfortunately Mike Ponce, Chuck Peak and I missed it - we were towing and recovering Chuck's boat after a break down. Thanks to Bill, Bob, Mike and all the guys who helped. It again shows the quality of the members of this club.
The Gilroy Bassmaster did well representing our club. We met the Thursday before the tournament to plan a strategy and decide locations to fish. The plan was to insure that every boat caught a limit. We blasted off and went to our prospective spots having agreed to meet at 11:00 A.M. at Holland to discuss the bite.
Chuck Peak and I had about 11# on a cut-tail senko bite in Victoria Canal, Mike Ponce and Thomas Wang had 11# on a flip bite near Union Point, Zak Elrite/Jeremy Spears were doing well in Italian. Bob Greneveld/Adam McAndrews, Ray Covert/Anthony Cano and Bill Lee/Bob Nathan were hunting for a consistent bite. We met at 11:00 and since Chuck and I had a limit already most of the boats went back towards Victoria or Union Point area. We all fished the same areas but the bite had changed, slack tide instead of moving water. However, as the tide started moving again Chuck and I were back on a cut-tail bite. Chuck caught a big fish 7.99#er and I followed up with a 3.5#er, we knew we were back on. We decided to get Bill/Bob and Ray/Anthony and bring them back to our spot. When we motored to where they were Bill/Bob had four in the well and Ray/Anthony had changed to another location.
We were preparing to head back to the spot when Chuck's motor would not start, oil was pouring out of the engine. We tried to see what was wrong without success. Finally after working on it for 20 minutes we decided to have Bill Lee tow us to make weigh-in about 18 miles away at Russo's. It is now 2:00 P.M. and we have a 3:40 weigh-in time (18 miles at 5 mph = 3.8 hours). Just about then Bob Nathan caught their fifth fish, a nice 3.0#er to fill out the limit. We tie up the two boats and were heading up Old River when the rope breaks and we decided that we better transfer the fish to Bill's boat and try to make weigh-in 15 miles away. We transfer the catch, leave Chuck bobbin in the wake and blast off. With :25 minutes to weigh-in and still 12 miles from Russo's Bill says "oh no, I'm about out of gas" we see if there are gas pumps at Cruiser Haven, but no luck. We just go for it hoping to not run of gas and also to make the weigh-in on time. We get to Russo's with 2 minutes to spare. As I am standing in line everyone is admiring the big fish in the second bag, saying this looks like big fish so far. Cooch announces 7.99# on the big fish and the crowd cheers, he announces 15.93# on the bag, He asks who caught the big fish and how - for a split second the thought crossed my mind but I remember Chuck bobbin in the surf. I must get back with Mike's help and tow him in. We get the fish weighed and Mike and I ran back looking for Chuck. He had trolled as far as the entrance to Indian Slough and we towed him for another hour and a half to Holland Marina. I stayed with the boat and Chuck was taken back to Russo's to get his motor home. We finally got everyone out of the water and safely on their way home at 7:30 PM, I got home at 10:30 really tired and exhausted but feeling great about the members of this club and the way we will support each other.
By the way, we got 2nd Place overall, Big Fish, 2nd Big Fish, 3rd Big Fish, Biggest Bag and 2nd Biggest Bag. Not too bad for a bunch of guys just having fun fishing from the south bay. I am certain we would have won it all, had we not had 11/2 hours taken from 4 fishermen when the bite was just turning on. Oh well, next year they are expecting 18 -20 clubs and we will feel even better when we win it all then. It was a lot of fun and a great display of teamwork.

It looks like I missed another great night tournament at Clear Lake. Almost everyone weighed in a limit. The windy was mild with clear skies. I can’t believe how many 5 plus pound bass were caught.
My hats off to Ron Hunnewell for weighing in a 25.61 lbs. limit. I heard Ron needed 3 weigh-in bags to carry his fish to the scales. Ron bladed his way to 1st place near Buckingham. Thomas Wang surprised his fishing guide (Bob Greneveld) by cranking a 20.50 lbs. limit in Knocti Bay. Mike Johnson placed in the money again throwing the SuperHog in Buckingham. Zak Elrite with another Big Fish Honors on a CreatureBait around Frazer Point.

It looks like I missed a good tournament on the Delta. We were in the 6 hour rule so weigh-in was at 12 noon. These are not bad weights for only fishing 12 hours. It was a little windy on Sunday, but over all we had some nice fishing. Air temp was around 90 degrees, and the water temp was in the mid 80’s.
Chuck Peak weighed in 5 bass each day. His 1st place finish was caught on wacky worming a cut tail around Connection. Adam McAndrew found the secret pattern for his 2nd place, which was caught on Sweet Beaver around the Holland marina. Don Welch caught his 3rd place limit in Disco on Sweet Beaver. Scott Stewart took Day 1 Big Fish honors by blading. Ray Covert landed Day 2 Big Fish honors on a senko. Congratulations Guys!!!

Wow… so where do I start?? Night fishing is for diehard fishermen, power naps, big plastic worms, and dropping a rod and reel combo over the side of the boat. There was a lot of baitfish in the water. Not to mention the crappie and catfish.
It was a beautiful summer night, t-shirt and shorts all the way. There was very little wind, flat calm waters, clear skies, half a moon, and fish to bite. 105 degrees during the day, 95 degrees in the shade, and 80's after the sun went down. The water was around 87 degrees on the southern end of the lake.
Mike Johnson weighed in a 1 st place heavy bag caught on Zoom Super Hog out of Buckingham. Tim Chapman's 2 nd place was caught on Sweet Beaver around Dollar Island . Adam McAndrew was caught junk fishing for his 3 rd place limit. By junk fishing, I mean throwing everything in the tacklebox. Thomas Wang took Big Fish honors by blading.
Now, Monty Jones, if he was a member would have taken the big fish check. But we only give out prizes and awards to club members. Monty's big 7.67 lbs. bass came on a 6” senko with a 1/2 oz. gambler screw in weight on 6 lbs line. Bob tells us that the bass that broke the line was even bigger. Guess what I'm using at the next night tournament?! GET THE NET!!
All in all we had an excellent night tournament. Congratulations guys!!!

The second day of fishing had more wind, but same fishing conditions. Mark Eglesia & Ray Covert caught their easy limit by fishing shad pattern speed traps on rocky points in the northern end of the lake. Wow… that sounds familiar. Javier Martinez & Mike Johnson missed 1st place by one fish, throwing senkos in the woods. Darrell Allen and Dale Bennett landed their 3rd place by also throwing plastics.
The pairings were selected by Don Welch (2004 Bass Angler of the Year). This is a Team Tournament. Well… I was expecting heavy stringers for both days. I guess the whitecaps kept everyone south. Besides the wind, the two days were a comfortable 75 degrees with bluebird skies. The water temp was around 65 degrees. The water level was extremely high and clear.
Ray Covert’s 1st place was caught crankin in 5 feet of water. Ray’s big fish came out of 20 feet of water drop shotting. Mark Eglesia slow rolled a spinnerbait in 15 feet of water for his 2nd place win. Mike Johnson drop shotted for his 3rd place win. Zak Elrite captured his Day 1 Big Fish on a senko. Bill Lee was drop shotting a little brown worm in 15 feet of water for Day 2 Big Fish. Way to go guys!!!

This event was hosted by the Bass Busters of Santa Clara, the Bass Classics of Santa Clara, and the Gilroy Bassmasters. Tackle packs, Certificates, and a rod & reel combo (raffle) for the kids was donated by Mel Cotton's & Boater's World. The Activity Coordinator was John Neibel (Bass Busters).
A special thanks to Darrell Allen (Gilroy Bassmasters) for donating trophy's for the kids, and Paul Barry's wife, Cindy (Bass Classics) for getting the plates for the trophies.
Every participating child under the age of 17, received a Certificate of Fishing Achievement, a trophy of their choice, and a tackle pack. There were 27 kids that participated. And just about everyone caught fish.
Around 12:30 pm we weighed in the fish, presented the awards, ate lunch and had a pinata for the kids.
The Day was a typical April Day... a little cool in the morning, partially cloudy, but comfortable. Water temperature was in the high 50's, air temperature got as high as 67 degrees, water clarity was 3 feet. There was a lot of boats on the water. The wind picked up around 11am.

Wow !!! Everyone caught fish… Amazing!!! Spring is here! With the new DFG regulations, we are limiting our weigh-ins to 4 bass instead of 5. The weather was beautiful. Lake Berryessa is beautiful. And of course, Vince Borrego with another in the money win with big fish. Vince was draggin a jig.

The following fishing report was copied from Vince Borrego's log on http://www.fishdelta.com
For the past month I've been prefishing the delta for my club tournament on 1/15/05 out of Orwood. Having recently moved out to Disco Bay (inside Cypress Bay on the Kellog Creek side) I was trying to decide between spending my entire day in Discovery Bay or fishing more of the heavy cover that I typically associate with Delta fishing. After 4-5 fairly unsuccessful trips finding a large enough concentration of fish in Disco, despite Long Nguyen trying to convince me that there's some toads in my back yard, I decide to start looking for structure that (a) had some sort of migration path from their fall locations, (b) had structure that would absorb and retain heat and (c) would provide enough food for the bass so that they did not have to travel far for a meal.
On 12/19/04 I found such a spot and was able to catch about 15 lbs. for 5 on a single pass flipping a 5" black/blue zipperworm with a 1/8oz weight (see previous thread started by Wolfeman for gear notes). The water clarity in this area was about 1-1.5 feet and the water temp at the time was ~50 degrees. With that location in mind I was able to find about 2-3 other spots on the delta holding fish, but nothing like the 12/19/04 trip. As the winter weather continued throughout the new year, the water in two of my primary areas started to get much colder and the weeds that I was targeting continued dying off rapidly. Sunday I took a quick trip back to the location on 12/19/04 that the fish moved about 10 feet and caught a 4.5 and 3 on back to back casts. I then decided not to burn up the spot and head for home. Water temp and clarity were pretty much the same so things were looking good.
Come tournament day we didn't have enough non-boaters so I fished alone and decided that I was going to spend all day on the honey hole as I knew the fish were there and could be caught. Once I arrived, the first thing I noticed that the water temp dropped to 45.6 and water clarity went to less than 6 inches with quite a bit of mud in the water from the previous Sunday. As the sun rose I saw a little bit of activity as bass were chasing baitfish along the outside weed edge all around the 100 yd section I was fishing and knew that I was in the right spot. I decided that I was going to stay the entire day fishing that area making pass over pass until I had to head back to the weigh in.
With the change in water clarity I noticed that after about 5 passes I wasn't getting bit on the black/blue zipperworm and began to start adapting to the conditions. I tried a buzzbait, spinnerbait, crankbait, jerkbait, jig (both white and black/red) and came up empty with another hour of fishing that same section. Just then one of my buddies Zak Elrite pulled up and was planning on fishing the same bank as I was. We chatted for a few minutes and told him that I'm going to fish this 50 yd section of bank here over and over so anything beyond that is fair game.
Around 9:45am (just as the tide was slowing from incoming to high tide) I was able to get a fat 12.5" bass on a junebug (purple/chart) zipperworm in the same area as I caught the 4.5lb bass last week. The bite was basically all pressure as I didn't feel a tap and noticed that the bass had abrasions on the top of it's mouth as it was rooting around for craws. Picking up on that I decided to switch over to a PowerShot rig with a Iovino S20 w/ chart tip on my second flipping rod that I rigged up. This is a rig that I've heard about and seen before but never fished on the delta. The only reason I had the rig tied up as a backup was from the article I read on FishDelta.com -- Special thanks Dan Mathisen and Damon Witt for the article.
Somewhere between 6-7 flips with this rig along the outside weed edge I set into a bass that not only was a new personal best on the Delta, but won big fish, the option pool and 1st place in the tournament weighing 8.56lbs!
As soon as the fish realized she was hooked she began to run underneath the boat toward deeper water where I was thankful that I was using 15 lbs. Yo-Zuri Hybrid and a 3/0 Gamakatsu EWG hook vs my normal dropshot rig. I pulled up the trolling motor and worked the fish toward the boat as I reached for my net and tried 3 times to get her in the net without success. She was definitely seeing red and trying to make a run for it. I wanted to take a cue from Robert Lee, Denny Brauer, Greg Hackney and Michael Iaconelli by lipping the fish at the side of the boat and screaming out something like "Yeah Baby!" or "Godzilla ain't got nothing on me boy!" but I remembered that my buddy Zak was just the other side of the tulle island. I didn't want to draw attention to the size of the fish that I just caught or it's location.
At that point I had to sit down and recollect myself before making another pass over the area. Later I found out from Zak that his non-boater heard the fish jumping around pointing it out to him and knew that I caught at least one fish. The rest of the day I expanded the area working deeper, shallower, etc along the same area without so much as a bite. Around 2:45pm I headed back to the weigh in and found that of the 14 boats only 6 people weighed in fish leaving most of the field in the skunk territory. 2nd place went to Mike Johnson (non-boater) with 5.13 lbs for 3 who fished Disco all day along with his boater Jim Woolridge who had 2 fish for 3.70 lbs for 3rd place. According to Jim they spent the entire day fishing docks in Disco with a Dropshot and also caught their fish between 10:00am - 10:30am just as the tide was slowing from incoming to high.
